CASE STUDY: KEY TECHNOLOGY AREAS AND
THEIR STATE OF INNOVATION IN INDIA

India has emerged as one of the biggest markets for many technology areas and to ensure the continued
exponential growth of the economy, India has aligned it’s national developmental model parallely with the
development of technologies such as Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Renewable Energy
etc.. These technologies act as a vector to ensure inclusive economic growth, social development and
transformation by improving access to basic services, enhancing connectivity and creating employment
opportunities.

The state of technological development in established industries can be determined by analysing patent
publications of commercially available products and processes offered by those industries. Further, to
understand the impact of the patent-innovation connection, it is important to look at how the patenting
activity is changing and the effect of these changes in innovation. This study focuses primarily on patenting
activities in India by Indian and non-Indian companies and organizations, in an attempt to understand the
innovation trend of key technological areas. However, some caution must be exercised in interpreting the
patent data, for it maybe more suggestive and not determinative to the extent of a patentee’s activities.

Observations and Findings:

The three technological areas with the greatest year-over-year increase are internet of things (IOT), ICT, and
Renewable Energy, each of which has recorded tremendous growth i.e. 169%, 168% and 70% respectively
over prior year figures. Majority of the patenting activity in said sectors is dominated by foreign applicants, led
by the USA, Europe, Japan and South Korea. China shows modest changes in patenting activity.
